From a Second-Hand Dollhouse to a Dream Home for Tiny Friends

How one Maileg mouse, a few adorable Rugabub animals, and a second-hand dollhouse sparked a creative journey.

When I first bought a Maileg mouse for my son, I thought it would simply be a beautiful toy that would spark his imagination.

I had no idea it would become the beginning of a hobby that I absolutely love.

It Started with One Tiny Mouse

Like many parents, I fell in love with the incredible craftsmanship of Maileg. Their charming mice have so much personality that they almost feel alive. They aren't just toys—they're little characters waiting for adventures.

Not long afterwards, I discovered the beautiful handmade animals from Rugabub.

Suddenly, our little family had grown.

There was a duck ready for a day at the beach, a gardener, a talented chef, a smart gentleman, a graceful ballerina, and many more adorable friends. Looking at them together, I kept thinking...

"They need somewhere to live."

That simple thought started an entirely new creative adventure.

The Hunt for the Perfect Dollhouse

Rather than buying a brand-new dollhouse, I began searching online for a second-hand dollhouse.

I loved the idea of giving an old dollhouse a second life.

Eventually, I found one that had definitely seen better days.

It was covered in stickers.

The walls were faded.

The colours were outdated.

Some rooms looked tired and forgotten.

But underneath all of that, I could see potential.

Instead of seeing an old toy, I saw a blank canvas.

The Beginning of a Dollhouse Renovation

As someone who has always loved sewing, knitting, crochet, painting and all kinds of creative projects, renovating this dollhouse felt like the perfect challenge.

Every room became an opportunity to create something unique.

I began imagining:

  • A cosy bedroom with handmade miniature bedding
  • A charming country kitchen
  • A relaxing bathroom
  • Beautiful wallpapers and tiny decorations
  • Handmade cushions, curtains and rugs
  • Miniature furniture styled with love

Each small detail brought the house closer to becoming a real home for my tiny animal family.

More Than Just a Dollhouse

This project quickly became much more than decorating miniature rooms.

It became a creative outlet that allowed me to slow down, enjoy the process, and bring tiny ideas to life.

There is something incredibly satisfying about working on miniatures.

Every tiny pillow, every piece of wallpaper, every little blanket tells a story.

Watching the old dollhouse slowly transform has been one of the most rewarding creative projects I've ever undertaken.

Small-world play also encourages creativity, storytelling, imaginative thinking and fine motor skills for children, making dollhouses much more than decorative displays.

Welcome to the Animal House

Today, this once-forgotten dollhouse is becoming a cosy home for my growing collection of tiny residents.

Each character has their own personality, their own favourite room, and their own little story to tell.

And this is only the beginning.

I'll be sharing the entire renovation journey—from room makeovers and DIY miniature projects to handmade bedding, furniture styling, decorating tips and behind-the-scenes progress.

If you love dollhouses, miniatures, Maileg, Rugabub animals, or simply enjoy watching old treasures transformed into something beautiful, you're in the right place.

Thank you for joining me on this little adventure.

Welcome to the Animal House.
