One of the things I love most about the miniature hobby is that there’s always something new to learn. Every tiny detail brings a dollhouse to life, and this time I decided to challenge myself by making my very first handmade miniature rug.
As someone who enjoys sewing, knitting, crochet, and dollhouse decorating, learning a new textile technique felt like the perfect next step.
Learning from Domestika
To begin my journey, I enrolled in the Miniature Furnishings for DIY Doll House course by Chelsea Andersson on Domestika.
The course introduces different techniques for creating realistic miniature home décor, and I was especially excited to learn how to make beautiful dollhouse rugs that look soft, textured, and full of character.
As a beginner, I found the lessons easy to follow while still encouraging creativity. It’s amazing how traditional embroidery techniques can be transformed into realistic miniature furnishings.
Choosing the Colours
For my first rug, I wanted an earthy colour palette inspired by nature.
I selected several shades of 4-ply yarn, including:
- Deep teal
- Olive green
- Rust brown
- Light sage
- Sky blue
- Navy blue
These colours create an organic, vintage-inspired pattern that would suit many dollhouse interiors.
Creating Texture with French Knots
Instead of using flat embroidery stitches, I used the French knot technique to create the rug’s fluffy texture.
Each tiny knot represents a tuft in the rug, giving it a realistic, plush appearance. Although each knot is small, the process requires patience, precision, and lots of repetition.
One of the things I enjoy most is watching the design slowly come to life. Every new colour adds more depth and personality to the rug.
The random pattern makes each section unique, giving the finished piece the charm of a handcrafted heirloom rather than something mass-produced.
Still a Work in Progress
At the moment, I’ve completed the colourful patterned section of the rug.
The next step is stitching a soft light blue background, which will frame the design and bring all the colours together.
I’m excited to see how the finished rug transforms the room inside my dollhouse.
As with many handmade miniature projects, the process takes time—but that’s part of what makes creating miniatures so rewarding.
